Greenfield Community Resilience is implementing a CERT program. Initial training of the first set of CERT trainers should happen in the Fall of 2024, after which GCR can onboard and train additional members of Greenfield’s CERT program. Register for the GreenfieldReady> mailing list to learn more when the program is ready!

About the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a program designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to educate volunteers on disaster response skills. The goal of CERT is to train community members in basic emergency response techniques, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, first aid, and team organization. This training enables individuals to help themselves, their families, and their communities respond to emergencies and disasters.

CERT training typically includes a 20-hour course that covers a range of topics, including disaster preparedness, incident command, medical operations, and damage assessment. The program also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in emergency response situations. CERT members are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to take on leadership roles within their communities during times of crisis.

By investing in CERT programs, communities can build a network of trained volunteers who can respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. This not only enhances public safety but also reduces the burden on professional first responders. Successful CERT programs have been implemented in cities and towns across the United States, with notable examples including San Francisco’s program, which has saved countless lives since its inception in 1994.

One such example is the city of Los Angeles’ CERT program, which has responded to numerous disasters, including wildfires and earthquakes. In 2008, a severe wildfire swept through the community of Malibu, causing widespread destruction. The local CERT team sprang into action, providing critical support to firefighters and helping residents evacuate safely. Thanks in part to their efforts, no lives were lost during this disaster.

In another instance, the CERT program in the town of North Bend, Washington, played a crucial role in responding to an earthquake that struck in 2001. The team helped rescue people trapped under debris and provided critical medical care until professional responders arrived on the scene. Their bravery and quick thinking undoubtedly saved lives during this disaster.
